A Year Of Numbers & The Rule Of Three

With the latest update of the new tier 3 restrictions putting 68% of the UK into the highest level of restriction due to Covid-19, I have realised that 2020 has been a year of numbers. The rule of 6. Tier 1, 2 and 3. The 25 toilet rolls we all panic bought in every weekly shop during March. The seeming use of 2,000 gallons of hand sanitiser used daily, and the endless number of times we have all been more confused by what Boris says after a press conference than before…so why not add to this and talk about the rule of three, or ‘the golden ratio’ in fashion!

The idea is that those things that come in threes are more likely to be aesthetically pleasing compared to if you group things into two’s or four’s. We all typically wear two-piece outfits, ie jeans and a jumper (or more recently trackies and a two week old t-shirt we haven’t washed). However, enter the rule of three. By adding an additional third item, it makes your outfit go from good to great so easily. The way I describe the method in my head is ‘bam, bam, bam’. Having been on photoshoot sets helping decide what outfits celebrities or models should be wearing, the stylists always (ALWAYS) go by this rule. And as Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion Is architecture; it is a matter of proportions” so that’s good enough for me.

The third piece can be anything from a coat to earrings, or even the addition of a belt – it’s simple. So, since Christmas is coming up and with most of us doing last minute shopping, here are some of my favourite picks to abide by the rule of three!

Firstly, I had to put the Vinnie Scarf from Molly Goddard on my list. It is very me and it’s perfect for heading into these colder months. It is definitely on the pricier side of things at £180, but who could not love these colours!

Those of you who know me will know that any form of a baker boy hat is a favourite of mine.. as you can see here. I bought mine a few years ago but ASOS have some great ones like this one below, priced at £16.

Orelia Jewellery is always on my wishlist because their gold jewellery collections are simply gorgeous! Their statement interlocking earrings are a classic and would go with any outfit, priced at £25.

Any black purse or bag is an essential we probably all have, but can I tempt you with & Other Stories croc embossed leather shoulder bag bringing back a bit of 90’s chic. Priced at £85.

And finally, the latest trend that I am loving at the moment is patterned tights. Tights are definitely not the sexiest thing out there, but it makes me want to wear them SO much more when they have a subtle pattern on them. We have all seen the Chanel branded tights, which are so gorgeous but are ridiculously expensive when they realistically ladder after one use. So, a better alternative is H&M’s heart tights which are so cute, priced at £9.99.
