63rd Grammy Awards

By Isabelle Rust

On Monday morning we all woke up to 63rd Grammy awards and although it was relatively socially distanced, it was the first normal awards show we have all seen in a while. The main headlines of the event contained news that Blue Ivy was seen taking a drink from her Grammy trophy, having now been named a Grammy award winner before hitting double digits. We also saw the return of Bruno Mars with his amazing performance singing his new single. And we obviously all saw Harry Styles kick start the Grammy awards off with a feather boa draped over his leather suit singing ‘Watermelon Sugar’ which left me speechless.

Aside from history being made with Beyonce and Taylor Swift, there were some truly amazing outfits which officially hailed the return of red carpet fashion. Bucket hats, florals, kitten heels and feather boas all graced the red carpet with the added bonus of co-ordinated masks too. Although there was a real excitement about it being the first red-carpet event in what seems like forever, many have branded it one of the worst years for Grammy fashion. I think it is harsh to cast this over everyone because there were some golden moments but there were definitely some more questionable choices too.

Dua Lipa wore an incredible barely-there bejewelled custom dress by Versace. In fact, all 3 of her outfits were insane but favourite has got to be the two piece she wore during her performance! Billie Eillish also delivered the cool girl vibes with her Gucci bucket hat and her green jewelled headpiece that literally only she could work. And of course, we can’t forget Bruno Mars who proved that the Grammy’s are more fun with hip flasks in their 70s style outfits as they walked the red carpet.

However, having spoken about the best outfits I also need to highlight some of the worst from the night. The Haim sisters were definitely in this category and although all three of them were coordinated, their Prada outfits were dubbed ‘ugly minimalism’ with many asking whose curtains they stole to make their outfits from! Noah Cyrus is also another celebrity who missed the mark because it appears as though she struggles like the rest of us to try and get a fitted bed sheet on our beds, looking like she gave up and just bought the sheets to the red carpet with her instead. And lastly an outfit that has divided a lot of people is Doja Cat’s deep V-neck dress that mixed leather and feather. Doja Cat’s Roberto Cavalli dress has a lot going on, almost looking like she is dressed for a party on the bottom and a motorbike drag race on the top. I personally think she should have stuck with feather or leather and potentially not have had the skirt starting so low rise but as she quite rightly pointed out, lockdown has been dull and boring - so why not go out there and mix it up, it is 2021 after all.
